Community Groups: Group Roles and Permissions (v6)

Community Groups on Daily Kos serve two key functions: they help organize content thematically for readers and they support site users who create such content.

A group has a unique name, and it consists of at least one site user, who as its creator also has the default role of Group Administrator.

The basic purpose of a Group is to serve as a thematic publishing organization, because Group Administrators and Group Moderators can publish stories directly to the Group and can also republish themetically related stories written by other site users to the Group.

The Group infrastructure also supports private messaging among Group membership.

This first resource for community Groups will document the three Group roles and their associated permissions.

Community Groups at Daily Kos have three membership roles. In descending order of permission, they are:

  • Group Administrator
  • Group Moderator
  • Group Member

The user creating a community Group is its default Group Administrator.

Group Administrators (and, optionally, Group Moderators) are able to invite other users to join the Group and able to respond to invitation requests to join the Group.

Group Administrators are able to manage the roles of the Group's membership (promote to role, demote from role, delete from Group, ban from Group).

There is no fixed limit on the number of users who can be promoted to Group Administrator or Group Moderator, and also no fixed limit on the number of Group Members. Decisions regarding membership and assigning roles are in the hands of individual Group leadership. As a point of best practice, however, we suggest that a Group have two (or more) Group Administrators so that, in the absence of one, Group management can continue uninterrupted.

This chart documents the permissions (capabilities) of Group roles:

Group Members can view and post to the Group's private message system on the Activity Tab. Members may wish to message the Group with suggestions of stories to republish to the Group. Members can also delete their own individual messages in the Activity Tab.

Group Moderators have the ability to publish and schedule their own stories directly to the Group, and can republish other users' stories directly to the Group. Moderators have full access to the Group's private message system on the Activity Tab, and can delete any message in that Tab. If enabled by a Group Administrator, Moderators can optionally manage invitations and invitation requests.

Group Administrators have have the ability to publish and schedule their own stories directly to the Group, and can republish other users' stories directly to the Group. Administrators have full access to the Group's private message system on the Activity Tab, and can delete any message in that Tab. Administrators can manage invitations and invitation requests. Administrators are able to manage Group membership (promote, demote, delete, ban) and are able to manage the Group's Profile page.
