Hi, I must have accidentally clicked the "notify me" button on a comment, now my mailbox is getting blown up.
How do I stop this flood?

Well, now I just found that even on comments I KNOW I didn't request eMail notification, I'm getting them.
    Please make it stop.

Hello. Thanks for asking. Sorry you're being overrun.

Unclick the "email me when someone replies to my comment" statement at the bottom of any comment box. The feature is supposed to work for your account across browsers, but we have had a Heisenbug experience with it of late. (If you've recently cleared your cookies, that might have affected your previous setting.)

Then, when you have an email reply, you'll notice you have the option to stop receiving these notices: "Stop following this discussion" appears next to the Post a Reply button. It's not obviously a link, which might be a design shortcoming. But it is, and after clicking on it you'll be redirected to a confirmation page that will allow you to undo that response if you like.
