What does it mean if someone's name is grayed-out in the list of people who recommended a particular article?

Hello, and thanks for asking this good question.

Normally, the two display states for the names of recommenders are either white or orange hyperlink, the latter appearing if you put your cursor over a particular name.

If you happen to click on a recommender's name, then you'll be redirected to that user's profile page. Then, if you return to that story to look at the list of recommenders again, that's when the user's name will display in a light gray.

Interestingly enough, if you happen to look at the list of recommenders for another story, you'll see the users' names in gray there, too, if you've already clicked through at some point to their profile. It's browser-specific and will persist whether you're logged in or not as long as you don't clear your cookies for the site on this particular browser.
