Is it possible to change usernames without simply opening a new account?

Good morning awesome Help Desk folks,

A new user (actually joined in Sept. 2016 but only just now wishing to become active) reached out to me this morning to ask if he could change his username to an alias. He's worried about posting under his real-world name due to possible repercussions in his very red home state. I advised him that the only way I knew to do this was just to open a new account with whatever alias he chooses, and stop using the old permanently. Is there another option? Can you (or some site agency) change the username by his request?

Thanks for all you do!

    Thanks for asking.

If this user has not posted any comments or stories under this current name, then we can change his username here.

If he has already posted, however, then the only option is as you describe: opening a new account under the desired name and letting the old one go dormant.

We do not need to know about the latter choice, but obviously we do with the former. So if that applies, send him our way.
