Commenting on "tip jar"

With the new DK4.1, I have noticed something odd.

In some diaries, there is a "reply" to the tip jar like usual. In other diaries, that "reply" is gone, and the only options are "recommend" and "hide" - the result, on those diaries, is that I go to recommend the tip jar, and accidentally hit the "hide" button because it is in the page location that my hand recognizes as the recommend button. Then I get the "do you really want to hide this" warning, and of course, I don't.

Why do some diaries not allow tip-jar-replies, and others are as they used to be?

Automatic tip jars cannot be replied to; custom ones can.

The reason is that the automatic one is content-free and merits no response. It is argued that a few users were abusing the ability to respond to the tip jar in order to take possession of the top of the diary for their own musings while taking attention away 'unfairly' from level-1 comments posted normally and in sequence - sometimes an hour or two after the diary was posted.

That makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the quick clarification. :-)
