Unable to publish diaries

I've tried three or four times to publish diaries over the last week or two and it never works. I click on the Publish button, it changes to "publishing ...", and then after a few more seconds it switches back to Publish. When I check to see if anything has appeared on the site, nothing has. What's going on?

    Hello, and thanks for asking.

I'm sorry you're having difficulties. I suspect the source of the problem is that you have not added a Tag to your draft posts. We'll soon have a more informative error message to alert site users to the need for at least one well-formed Tag.

New and experienced users alike sometimes forget to add Tag(s) before they attempt to publish a post. Every post must have at least one Tag for it to be published, or even to have it queued or scheduled to publish. If you need details about how to create Tags, please read on.

Tags serve as labels for our stories, permitting users to search for stories on a particular topic and identifying which topics are covered the most. A Tag has the same general appearance as a Twitter hashtag does. Our software automatically applies the #, so you don't need to do so. In fact, if you DO include the #, your Tag will not be accepted. The text area in which to enter Tag(s) is right beneath the text area for the body of the story.

Tags must include ONLY letters and numbers, plus these three special characters— hyphen, ampersand, and period—the last of which cannot come at the end of the Tag. Letters may be upper or lower case, though it can help improve readability if the first letter of a word or name is capitalized; they are treated the same regardless. Tags may not have spaces within them.

To create a useful Tag, consider the appropriate labels or keywords which you want to have associated with your story, then enter them one at a time in that text area. Then click Enter or the comma key. Either keystroke will signal an end to the tag and put it in a display right below that Tag field. You can remove a Tag from that display by clicking on its X.

When you are satisfied with your Tags, then save your draft, using the button at the top right. After you do that, try publishing/queuing your post. If you still receive an error and you double-check that all your Tags comply with the required format, then please feel free to return to Help Desk with the details, including the operating system and browser you are using.

Thanks for your support of the mission of the site.
