Email notification of comments

In the past two days my email suddenly filled up with notices of people responding to my comments. It appears that the check box to comments asking for email when there is a response is now defaulted to "yes". Any way to turn this annoyance off? I really don't want to have to uncheck the damn box every time I post a comment.

    Hello, and thanks for asking.

I'm sorry you're having this problem, but it's been an intermittent annoyance we've not been able to diagnose fully and so we can't advance with a fix.

The setting is supposed to be sticky, whichever way you toggle it. The not-sticking is the problem. Have you tried unchecking that box and then do you find it has not made a difference for you?

(By the way, you can also choose the "stop following this discussion" option for any replies that do wind up sending notifications to your email. That link isn't obvious as links go, but it's pale gray and next to the orange Post a Reply button.)

I see the intermittent part. Initially, even though I toggled the "email me" option off, it would be toggled on in the next comment. At some point this afternoon it "stuck", and it was "off" when I went to make comments, then a few minutes ago I opened comment replies to two comments in different windows - one had the "email" toggled on, the other not. Guess I'll have to try harder to remember to see if it's checked, and uncheck it, and hope that the infestation moves on to some other user.
