"Rate All" appears after my comments, and I can't recommend, publish diaries, etc

These symptoms mean that the DK javascript functions have not loaded properly. There are many reasons this can happen.

  1. Try quitting your browser and restarting. It may be as simple as your browser running low on memory. Try holding "shift" while reloading the home page, and make sure the whole page load completes before you take any other actions. Restarting your whole computer is a good idea, too, but IME is rarely necessary, and of course it's more trouble.

  2. Have you installed any plugins recently? If you're not running Internet Explorer, most of the time the issue is a new plugin or security/privacy setting.

If you're not sure what you've done recently, try running Firefox in Safe Mode or try running Chrome in Incognito mode

Even with ads off, Daily Kos uses some javascript libraries hosted by other domains, most notably google. If you've blocked their js, you've also blocked ours.

  3. If you are running Internet Explorer, see if you've gotten yourself into compatibility mode.

In IE8 * under "Tools" go to "Compatibility View Settings"

Remove daily kos from "Compatibilty View"

Regarding the three check boxes at the bottom of the "Compatibility View Settings" dialog box:

Check the box "Included updated websites from Miicrosoft"

Check the box "Display Intranet sites in Compatibility View"

DO NOT Check the box "Display all websites in Compatibilty View"`

  4. If you are running Internet Explorer 7, this is pretty much the end of the line for you on that browser. You can use the "Rate All" button to rate by checking off all the comments you want to recommend and then submitting all of them at once using the button. IE7 is very old and you will be much happier when you are using another browser. If you must keep IE7 for a particular legacy application, consider installing a second browser, like Firefox, for Daily Kos and your other ordinary surfing needs. The internet will suddenly be a lot prettier and easier to use.

  5. Try installing or using a second browser other than your main one if you're confused about how it's looking for you versus everyone else, or if you're in a hurry to make things work right now.

Plugins known to cause problems include: NoScript, AdBlock, LastPass, Scorpion Adware and httpsEverywhere. Note that when whitelisting domains that we use the hosted jQuery libraries at googleapis.com.

If you are having routine problems with your connection, you may find this article about working with dialup, a slow connection, or older hardware helpful. It can also be worth trying our mobile site, which is a lighter version of the main site with limited functionality (recommends and commenting only).
